Tips About Ring Sizes
I’ve been selling rings for a long time and the best advice I can give you about buying one for yourself or someone else is that if the ring doesn’t fit on one finger, most people will be able to fit in on another finger and are happy to wear it there.
The fit of a ring will vary depending on the length of your finger from 'bottom' knuckle to 'middle' knuckle and of course the time of day, season, etc. You'll notice fingers seem to expand in the heat and contract in the cooler months. Also, a wider ring will sit differently on your finger than one with a thinner band.
If you already know what size fits your finger, selection is easy. If you don’t know your ring size, you could visit your local jeweller who can measure your fingers using a ring gauge. Otherwise, to find out if the ring you like will fit you, follow these steps –
-
Establish which finger you’d like to wear the ring on.
-
Find an existing ring that fits that finger and align a ruler across the middle, measuring the inner diameter of the ring (particularly if the ring is thick). It’s impossible to get an exact measurement, so close enough is fine.
-
Check this measurement against the chart below to find out what number size your finger is. Compare this size to that listed for the ring.

Another way is to wrap a 5mm wide strip of paper around your finger. Sticky tape the strip together to form a ring and check that you can move it up and down your finger, past the knuckle. Then slide paper ring off carefully and measure the inner diameter. Compare that measurement with those on the chart below.
