Jewellery Care

Wire-wrapped Gemstone Pendants

As with all fine jewellery, you should treat your wire-wrapped pieces with care. Remove them before you shower, swim or go to bed. Avoid exposure to harsh chemicals. Keep in mind that some gemstones will be affected by even mild chemicals such as those in shampoo or body products. Perfume can also be problematic. Store your pieces in a dry place, preferably not rubbing against other jewellery to avoid scratching.

Sterling Silver Wire-wrapped Pendants -

The nature of sterling silver is that it will tarnish over time. The best advice is to wear your pieces often and when not wearing them store in a moisture free, dark place. You can polish the silver wire carefully with a silver cloth, but of course this will only clean the outer layers. Liquid silver cleaners can be very harsh and while they’ll clean the silver, they might damage the gemstones. Professional cleaning by a jeweller is recommended if needed.

Gold-filled Wire-wrapped Pendants -

The beauty of gold is that it doesn’t tarnish like sterling silver. To restore its shine if needed, use a polishing cloth. Store carefully to avoid scratches.

Polymer Resin Sculpted Pendants

The resin clay is lightweight, strong and durable, but still needs to be treated with care. Some pendants, such as those with a metallic finish, have been painted and then coated with a durable clear sealer.

These pieces should not be cleaned or worn in water (when swimming or showering) as moisture and chemicals may affect the finish and/or discolour the stones. If needed, wipe gently with a dry cloth. Store carefully to avoid scratching the surface.

Sterling Silver

Sterling silver, like other precious metal alloys, can oxidise with time. Properly maintained silver jewellery improves with age and develops a lush patina.

  • For bracelets and necklaces that are regularly in contact with the skin, clean with a mild soap and water solution. Use a super soft toothbrush to access internal areas if needed. Pat the jewellery dry with a soft cloth or paper towel and then polish it with a silver polishing cloth. For more stubborn dirt, use a liquid dip cleaner designed for silver use which can be purchased at a supermarket. Always make sure your piece is completely dry before storing it away.

  • Store your silver in a cool, dark, dry place where it isn’t exposed to air. If possible, wrap pieces in a soft piece of cloth or tissue and keep in plastic bags. (FYI - I keep my personal silver in plastic zip lock bags - no tissue!) Store pieces individually so that they don't knock together and scratch.

  • Don’t rub silver with anything other than a polishing cloth. Tissue paper or paper towels can cause scratches because of the fibres in these products.

  • Don't wear sterling silver in chlorinated water or when working with household or other chemicals. Even products such as shampoo can affect the silver.

  • Remember that sterling silver is quite a soft metal. Be sure to take care when storing earrings as the hooks or wire can bend out of shape easily.

(Please note this information is for silver-only pieces such as pendants, bracelets, earrings and chains, not for             beads threaded on jewellery wire.)

Beaded Gemstone & Silver

Some necklaces and bracelets are crafted from gemstone and sterling silver beads threaded onto jewellery wire. These pieces should not be cleaned or worn in water (when swimming or showering) as moisture and chemicals may discolour the stones and weaken the wire thread over time. Store these pieces flat in a cool, dark, dry place where they aren’t exposed to air. Be careful not to bend the wire as kinks are difficult to remove. Clean the sterling silver beads with a silver polishing cloth when required.

Earrings and bangles made with sterling silver and gemstones can generally be cleaned and stored in the same way as listed under 'Sterling Silver' above, with the exception of using a silver cleaning dip or liquid, as the chemicals in these products may discolour or damage the gemstones.

Stretch Bracelets

The stretch bracelets are made using the highest quality, durable elastic. You can expect a long life out of these pieces if you treat them with care. Please don’t clean or wear them in water (when swimming or showering) as moisture and chemicals may affect the finish and/or discolour the stones. If sterling silver beads and/or charms are incorporated into the design, clean these with a silver polishing cloth when required.
